What color do you recommend for my home’s exterior?

The color you choose depends on your taste. Pick colors that best suit the style of your home. For example, if you have a Cape Cod-style home, Northeastern colors will look better on that exterior than, let’s say, Spanish Colonial-style colors. Also, since dark colors tend to fade more quickly than lighter colors, we suggest you keep dark colors to a minimum. Dark colors always work best as accents for the interior or exterior doors, shutters, etc.

How often should my house be painted?

Well, it all depends. There are a lot of factors that determine how long paint lasts. Poorly prepared surfaces will crack and peel. Darker colors will fade. Older wood will not hold paint like new wood will. The best advice is to paint before the exterior looks damaged and certainly before it actually gets damaged. The majority of the time spent on painting exteriors is in preparing the surface, sanding, patching, etc. If you paint your house every 4-6 years, there will be less time spent on this prep work than if you paint every 8-10 years. It's also smart to touch up the problem areas as often as every 1 to 2 years. Maintaining your paint job will keep your home looking beautiful and at its best, AND it will also will reduce the risk of termites, dry-rot and other expensive problems that come from neglect.

What are some things that I can do before you get here?

We will take care of the work for you, but here are a few things that we suggest to prepare:

  • Remove all mirrors and pictures from walls that need to be painted.
  • A few days prior to your paint job, remove any items that may be an obstruction to the painters.
  • Allow the painter easy access to a water source. This way he or she can wash brushes without having to walk all over your house.
  • Move furniture away from the walls and cover it with a drop cloth.
  • If the corners of baseboards appear dirty, clean and vacuum them.
  • Keep pets and children away from the areas that are being painted.
